ℹ️ Understanding Pet Caloric Needs

What is RER?

Resting Energy Requirement (RER) is the number of calories a pet needs at complete rest in a thermoneutral environment. It represents the energy needed for basic bodily functions like breathing, circulation, and cell maintenance.

RER (kcal/day) = 70 x (Body Weight in kg)^0.75

What is MER?

Maintenance Energy Requirement (MER) is the total daily caloric need after accounting for activity, life stage, reproductive status, and health conditions. It is calculated by multiplying RER by one or more adjustment factors.

MER (kcal/day) = RER x Life Stage Factor x Activity Factor x Condition Factors

Life Stage Factors

  • Puppy (under 4 months): 3.0x RER — rapid growth phase
  • Puppy (4-12 months): 2.0x RER — continued growth
  • Adult dog (intact): 1.8x RER
  • Adult dog (spayed/neutered): 1.6x RER
  • Senior dog: 1.2-1.4x RER — reduced metabolism
  • Kitten (under 6 months): 2.5x RER
  • Adult cat (intact): 1.4x RER
  • Adult cat (spayed/neutered): 1.2x RER
  • Senior cat: 1.1x RER

Body Condition Score (BCS)

BCS is a visual and tactile assessment on a 1-9 scale:

  • 1-3 (Underweight): Ribs easily visible, minimal fat cover, prominent bones
  • 4-5 (Ideal): Ribs easily felt with slight fat cover, visible waist from above
  • 6-7 (Overweight): Ribs palpable with moderate fat, waist less defined
  • 8-9 (Obese): Ribs difficult to feel, no visible waist, fat deposits

How Food Portions Are Calculated

Daily food amounts are estimated based on standard caloric densities:

  • Dry food (kibble): ~350-400 kcal per cup
  • Wet/canned food: ~250 kcal per standard can (13 oz / 370g)
  • Raw diet: ~500 kcal per pound of food
⚠️ Disclaimer: This calculator provides estimates based on veterinary-standard formulas. Individual caloric needs can vary significantly. Always consult your veterinarian for personalized nutrition advice, especially for pets with medical conditions, during pregnancy/lactation, or for growing animals.
