Settings

DocsKeeper reads a plain-text copy of each document and stores it encrypted, so search finds words that are inside a document and not just in its title. Turn this off and search covers titles, tags and notes only.

Where new documents are saved

Every Doc, Sheet, Slide and Drawing DocsKeeper creates goes into a folder called DocsKeeper in your Google Drive, instead of cluttering the root. Quick notes, checklists, markdown notes and code snippets are not Google files at all, so they never appear in Drive.

This only moves documents DocsKeeper created for you. Anything you added from your own Drive is left exactly where it is.

Your data

Everything DocsKeeper knows about your library, as a plain JSON file.

Deleting your DocsKeeper data removes tags, collections and notes only. Not one of your Google documents is touched.

What DocsKeeper does

How it works, how to use it, keyboard shortcuts

Google Drive is very good at storing documents and not nearly as good at reminding you they exist. DocsKeeper is a free organiser that sits on top of your own Google Drive and adds the layer Drive leaves out: tags, collections, private notes, links between related documents, and a search box that looks inside your documents rather than just at their names.

Nothing is copied away from Google. When you open a document here, the real Google Docs or Google Sheets editor loads inside the page, so every keystroke saves to Google exactly as it always did. Google stays the single source of truth; DocsKeeper only remembers how you like things organised.

How to use it

  1. Connect your Google account. You are asked only for the drive.file permission — the narrowest one Google offers. DocsKeeper can only see documents it creates for you, or ones you personally choose in Google’s own picker.
  2. Add documents. Hit New to create a Doc or Sheet from a template, or Add existing to pick files already in your Drive.
  3. Or write a quick note. For anything under 5,000 characters, a quick note skips Google entirely — press n and start typing. It saves as you go, is encrypted on our server, and can be tagged, filed and searched just like a document. Its first line becomes its title, and any web address you paste in becomes an underlined, clickable link. Use the Write / Preview switch at the top of the editor (or Ctrl+E) to flip between typing and the formatted result — that is how you see markdown rendered and code highlighted.
  4. Organise them. Open a document and add tags, choose a collection, and jot private notes in the side panel. Link related documents together and the backlinks appear on their own.
  5. Find anything. Press Ctrl+K (+K on a Mac) and start typing. You can also use tag:work, type:sheet, in:Studies and is:pinned to narrow things down.

Is it really free?

Yes. No signup, no subscription, no trial, no limits. FreeWWW does not create an account for you and never asks for payment details. You sign in with your own Google account purely so the app is allowed to open your documents.
