Flag semaphore is a visual communication system where a person holds two flags in specific positions to represent letters, digits, and commands. Each character is a unique pair of arm angles from 8 positions arranged like a clock face.
It was widely used by navies for ship-to-ship communication and is still taught in scouting and maritime training. The famous peace symbol ☮ is formed by superimposing the semaphore letters N and D (Nuclear Disarmament).

Positions default to the receiver’s view (facing the signaler — most common in reference charts). Toggle to signaler’s view in the Reference tab to see it from the sender’s perspective.
The signaler’s right hand holds a yellow flag, left hand holds a red flag (at sea). The 26 letters are organized into 7 “circles” based on which pair of the 8 positions is used.
